World Outreach Ministry Foundation Uganda
In January 1985, some children of Seguku village came to Pastor Steven Mayanja’s house attracted by his new motor-powered bicycle, he was a motor vehicle mechanic at that time, having received Jesus Christ in the underground church during President Idi Amin’s regime, Steven shared the Gospel with those children and they accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord. A children’s Church was born out of that, and the work to reach the village with Jesus’ Love was born.
That same year 1985, Steven Mayanja joined Seattle Bible College in Washington, USA. This is where he met his co-workers and parents in the Ministry, Rev. Ron & Shirley DeVore; the Holy Spirit put them together and they traveled back to Uganda, Africa in June, 1987.
On June 21, 1987, Rev. Ron and Shirley DeVore along with Pastor Steven Mayanja held the first Gospel crusade in what was then the dance hall of the village! That morning over 70 people got saved and later during the evening service over 30 people got saved; Seguku Worship Center was born! So what was only a children’s church was then multiplied and we had both church for the parents and for the children. This was the beginning of all the work UCOM and WOMF are doing all over the World.
The village of Seguku is the headquarters for UCOM and WOMF in Uganda; it is where the main church Seguku Worship Center is located. Also Seguku is home to Yesu Akwagala Bible College and the Yesu Akwagala Guest House, this is the home for missionaries on short-time ministry and those visiting WOMF in Uganda. It’s also the home of the UCOM Foreign Missions Director, the President and Founders of WOMF, Rev Ronald & Shirley DeVore.
The many ministries and outreaches that UCOM and WOMF have established were started here in Uganda and have been spread throughout neighboring countries Kenya, Rwanda and Sudan.
Uganda Christian Outreach Ministries (UCOM) holds crusades in villages where the gospel of Jesus Christ has not been preached before. These crusades are held once every month for a week, and we have seen multitudes getting saved, and new churches planted in villages, towns and also across the boarders in neighboring nations. Today, UCOM has a total of 120 churches! God has blessed us with a Crusade-Truck that ferries our luggage and equipment used by the team, the team is comprised of 35 to 40 people.
We hold various conferences and seminars throughout the year which are: the Pastors/Leaders’ Conference, the Women’s Annual Conference, the Annual Youth Conference, a Sunday-School teachers’ Seminar, and the Men’s Annual Conference, which are held at Seguku Worship Center and at our other Regional Church headquarters. Through these seminars, we have been able broadcast our vision and equip many for the work of the ministry and many have discovered their God-given ministry-gifts and calling.
UCOM is reaching over 90 prisons across Uganda today. We bring relief and hope to prison-inmates in the form of food, medical care, beddings and the Love of Jesus every week-day. Pastor Mike and his wife Rebecca, together with their staff, have been able to fulfill our Lord’s great commission and have seen hundreds committing their lives to Jesus. We have had several former inmates join our Bible Colleges, trained and are now in ministry reaching out to inmates with the Love of God that transformed them.
UCOM has set up Primary and High Schools to train and equip the young generation via education with a vision of making them disciples of Jesus Christ. Many have gone through our schools and a number have joined our Bible Colleges and are in full-time ministry today.
Notably of our schools, is one located on a remote island in Lake Victoria, Lwajje Island, it is a fishing community. The people there had no regard for education, until UCOM started a Primary School there and planted a Church. Many children have gone through this school, joined high school and gone on to colleges. The school population is currently over 200 students, has boarding facilities and solar-power. The church here is our launching-pad to several other islands scattered across the world’s second largest fresh-water lake.
FHL gives wholesome-care to over 500 orphans and other vulnerable children while maintaining their next-kin relationship in their communities. We have built several Children’s Homes in Kyamulibwa, Masaka; Obule-lira, Soroti; & Usuk, Katakwi, to provide shelter and family-care for homeless children. Through this ministry, we are and have educated many children and several have graduated from Colleges and Universities such as Makerere University, MUBS-Nakawa and Kyambogo University and our own Yesu Akwagala Bible College.
Uganda is also home to the Trauma Center, a home that provides hope and restoration to children that have been abused and traumatized severely. It is also a home for sick children and those recovering from various illnesses for which they have been stigmatized. From here, they are enrolled in schools and where possible re-integrated into their former communities. We also have the Bethany House which takes care of abandoned babies and children from birth to 4 years old, showing them the love of Jesus Christ and giving them a hope and a future. Hannah’s house is a home for young mothers who are HIV victims, rape victims and/or abused young ladies. It is located at our regional headquarters in Masaka in Southern Uganda. This program has helped young ladies to gain back their confidence and rise up to become what the Lord God has planned for them to be. Missionary Rozena Erbes oversees and runs this ministry.
UCOM has an AIDS/HIV Ministry that offers Voluntary Counseling & Testing with a Christian & biblical bias, bringing hope to those living with Aids/HIV and their care-givers and family. We do network with agencies to do a wholesome and efficient job. UCOM has planted over 120 churches across Uganda and together with WOMF, Pastor Ron and Mama Shirley DeVore, have crossed the boarders to plant churches in Rwanda, Kenya, Congo and the Southern Sudan. Soon we will be launching new churches in Burundi after two of our YABC –Seguku students from Burundi, have graduated.
God has raised many people across America and Canada to partner with us in spreading the love and word of Jesus across Africa, the Philippines and Bangladesh. You, our Mission Partners, have raised money that has enabled us to do great things, we are so thankful for both your spiritual and financial support.
